Athletes in the Diaspora: Community Interventions

The Amobi Okoye Foundation, Inc. sponsors Athletes in the Diaspora – Community Interventions (ADCI), an international endeavor of Nigerian athletes who have left their native land, and now want to contribute their talent, generosity, and friendship to parts of Nigeria lacking in basic human needs. The Vision of ADCI is to minimize inequalities by maximizing opportunities.  

ADCI’s  primary goal is to improve educational opportunities and physical activity for the children of several semi-rural Nigerian communities

ADCI Programs

C.A.T.E. SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT:
The C.A.T.E. (Changing Africa Through Education)

In 2008 ADCI met with the National Universities Commission (NUC) to start a scholarship program that will provide full academic scholarships and athletic scholarships to deserving young men and women preparing to attend university.  The criteria for application and acceptance of this scholarship are on page (5).  On last years’ 2009 trip, CATE Scholarships were awarded to 28 Nigerian Student-Athletes.  These athletes were Gold medal finalists of non-team events from the Nigeria Universities Games Association (NUGA) sports competition, which is an annual  Nigerian College Olympics.     

Scholarships Will Cover:
- Books
- Tuition
- Boarding


PHYSICAL ACTIVITY/AMERICAN FOOTBALL CAMP:

The team will be hosting 2 physical activity camps where children will be taught the fundamentals and importance of exercise and proper nutrition as well as the fundamentals ofplaying American style football. The athletes will serve as coaches for the different sectors of the camp which will help reduce violence and vandalism as it provides a different positive option for most of these kids.


YOUTH TENNIS SPONSORSHIP:

ADCI in conjunction with Nike INC will support the Nigeria Tennis Federations call for the advancement of tennis among the youth and for sports development by donating to it, the necessary apparel and equipment needed to safely play tennis.


ADCI MEDICAL CLINIC:

the team, joined by 4 Medical doctors from Oklahoma will be hosting free day clinics where the underprivileged people in need of medical attention and pregnant women will get the opportunity to see a doctor and get adequate medical help. The clinic will be held in 5 different states where medical samples, prenatal, and children’s vitamins will be provided accordingly, as part of the program, for the completion of the proper recommended dosage needed for cure. This is the first step in providing for the assessed needs from the previous trip.
